Portuguese Wines Fair Day in Warsaw

The event was attended by over 400 participants.

Over 400 people, including 100 professionals from the wine industry (sommeliers, importers, restaurant owners) took part in this special event – Wines of Portugal Tasting, organized by Polish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (PPCC) in cooperation with ViniPortugal – Professional Association of Portuguese Wine Industry. Currently almost every 10th wine sold in Poland comes from Portugal.

Professional Masterclasses and tastings of the highest quality Portuguese wines took place during the event. The participants could broaden their knowledge about the wine market, taste Portuguese wines produced from 250 varieties of grapes and establish business relations with 29 producers. The first Polish edition of Wines
of Portugal Tasting was held in InterContinental Warsaw hotel.

The wine consumption in Poland is steadily growing. KPMG Report “The 2014 Alcoholic Beverages Market in Poland” shows that as much as 10% of the total amount spent on alcohol in our country is spent on wine. An average Pole drinks approx. 7 liters of wine, of which 3.5 liters is a grape wine. Poland occupies the 35th place in terms of wine consumption in international rankings, but it is worth noticing that since 2004 the sale of wine has grown in our country by 56%. Most of wines are imported from Europe. The Iberian Peninsula countries have become an important provider in recent years. Around 7.5 million liters of wine were imported from Portugal in 2014, whereas 10 years earlier it was less than 170 thousand liters. Currently almost every 10th wine sold in Poland comes from Portugal.

The increase in Portuguese wine exports to Poland is a result of closer economic cooperation between the two countries. Last year’s trade turnover between Portugal and Poland reached EUR 1.1 billion thanks – to a great extent – to the Polish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (PPCC).

  • For almost 8 years we have been strengthening bilateral economic relations between Poland and Portugal and organizing events promoting Portuguese and Polish values and culture. The Portuguese Wines Fair in Warsaw was another successful initiative by the PPCC. Due to its quality and value for money, Portuguese wines have been very much appreciated in Poland, as almost one in every 10 bottles of table wine sold in Poland comes from Portugal – says Pedro Pereira da Silva, President of the Polish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (PPCC).
  • The Polish market is very important for Portugal. In the first semester we sold EUR 7 mln worth of wine in Poland, which make us the 6th provider of wine in Poland – says Maria Amélia Paiva, Ambassador of Portugal to Poland.

Portuguese wines are produced from varieties that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Although Portugal is a small country, it is characterized by a wide range of microclimates. Thanks to this, Portuguese wines are stylistically very diversified, excellent both with food or solo. Thanks to the 250 grape varieties grown in the country, Portugal is capable of producing very different white, red and rosé wines, characteristic of each of the 14 regions. Some of the most famous and unique varieties are: Alvarinho, Arinto, Encruzado and Fernão Pires (white varieties), and Baga, Castelão, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira and Aragonez. (red varieties).

  • Almost 2% of the wine produced in the world is produced in Portugal .We are the 12th producer and 9th exporter of wine. We export half of our total production, which in value constitutes approx. 60%. – said Jorge Monteiro, President of ViniPortugal.

During the tasting, the following producers presented their wines: Adega Ponte De Lima, Agrimota – Sociedade Agrícola e Florestal, Anselmo Mendes Vinhos, Caminhos Cruzados, Casa Santos Lima – Companhia Das Vinhas, Companhia das Quintas, Cortes De Cima, Dão Sul – Sociedade Vitivinícola, Esporão, Ewine, Fiuza & Bright – Sociedade Vitivinícola, Herdade das Servas, João Teodósio Matos Barbosa & Filhos, João Portugal Ramos Vinhos, José Maria da Fonseca Vinhos, Luís Pato, Mouchão, Niepoort Vinhos S.A, Quinta da Alorna Vinhos, Quinta da Murta, Quinta da Plansel, , Quinta de Curvos – Sociedade Agrícola Quinta do Crasto, Rozès, Sensi Wine, Serrano Mira – Sociedade Vinícola, Soc. Wines of Portugal Tasting for the first time in Warsaw.

On the 8th October, Warsaw will host a special event – Wines of Portugal Tasting. The event is organized by The Polish – Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (PPCC), for the first time in cooperation with ViniPortugal – The Professional Association of the Portuguese Wine Industry. In order to ensure a high quality wine trade event, the organizers are inviting top wine industry professionals (sommeliers, importers and restaurant owners) for a Masterclass and to taste Portuguese wines of the highest quality.

The first Polish edition of Wines of Portugal Tasting will take place in the InterContinental Warsaw Hotel.

This is another event – following the Portuguese Week “Flavours of Portugal”, organized annually in May – aimed at promoting Portugal in Poland. Wines of Portugal Tasting will be a great opportunity for Polish wine industry professionals to meet producers of fine wines from Portugal, to deepen their knowledge of the market and to establish business relations in one day and in one place – said PPCC Secretary General, Wojciech Baczyński.

Portuguese wines are produced from unique types of grapes that are not grown anywhere else. Although Portugal is a small country, it encompasses a wide range of microclimates which provides a diversity of wine styles. As a result, Portuguese wines are excellent both in combination with food, and solo. Portugal’s 14 growing regions produce 250 different grape types used in the production of white, red and rosé wines. The most popular and unique Portuguese varieties are: Alvarinho, Arinto, Encruzado and Fernão Pires (white varieties) and Baga, Castelão, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira and Aragonez (red varieties).

The wide range of Portuguese grapes and its characteristic acidity result in a great potential for wine and food pairing. Portuguese wine can be an excellent component of every dish. The wine making tradition of Portugal dates back about 4,000 years – such long experience is a guarantee of safety. The new generations of Portuguese winemakers combine tradition with dynamic modernity.
