The wine consumption in Poland is steadily growing. KPMG Report “The 2014 Alcoholic Beverages Market in Poland” shows that as much as 10% of the total amount spent on alcohol in our country is spent on wine. An average Pole drinks approx. 7 liters of wine, of which 3.5 liters is a grape wine. Poland occupies the 35th place in terms of wine consumption in international rankings, but it is worth noticing that since 2004 the sale of wine has grown in our country by 56%. Most of wines are imported from Europe. The Iberian Peninsula countries have become an important provider in recent years. Around 7.5 million liters of wine were imported from Portugal in 2014, whereas 10 years earlier it was less than 170 thousand liters. Currently almost every 10th wine sold in Poland comes from Portugal.
The increase in Portuguese wine exports to Poland is a result of closer economic cooperation between the two countries. Last year’s trade turnover between Portugal and Poland reached EUR 1.1 billion thanks – to a great extent – to the Polish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (PPCC).
- For almost 8 years we have been strengthening bilateral economic relations between Poland and Portugal and organizing events promoting Portuguese and Polish values and culture. The Portuguese Wines Fair in Warsaw was another successful initiative by the PPCC. Due to its quality and value for money, Portuguese wines have been very much appreciated in Poland, as almost one in every 10 bottles of table wine sold in Poland comes from Portugal – says Pedro Pereira da Silva, President of the Polish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (PPCC).
- The Polish market is very important for Portugal. In the first semester we sold EUR 7 mln worth of wine in Poland, which make us the 6th provider of wine in Poland – says Maria Amélia Paiva, Ambassador of Portugal to Poland.
Portuguese wines are produced from varieties that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Although Portugal is a small country, it is characterized by a wide range of microclimates. Thanks to this, Portuguese wines are stylistically very diversified, excellent both with food or solo. Thanks to the 250 grape varieties grown in the country, Portugal is capable of producing very different white, red and rosé wines, characteristic of each of the 14 regions. Some of the most famous and unique varieties are: Alvarinho, Arinto, Encruzado and Fernão Pires (white varieties), and Baga, Castelão, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira and Aragonez. (red varieties).
- Almost 2% of the wine produced in the world is produced in Portugal .We are the 12th producer and 9th exporter of wine. We export half of our total production, which in value constitutes approx. 60%. – said Jorge Monteiro, President of ViniPortugal.
